In 1604 a supernova appeared in the constellation of Serpentarius. This Supernova was discovered not far from the three planets Mars, Jupiter and Saturnus, which at the time formed a conjunction known as the Fiery Trigon, a celestial phenomenon presaging great things. Comets, stars and conjunction were regarded as omens, for good or bad. Thus the ‘Confessio Fraternitatis’ refers to the Supernova of 1604 as a marvellous sign sent by God:
“… yeah, the Lord God hath already sent before certain messengers, which should testify his will, to wit, some new stars, which do appear and are seen in the firmament in Serpentarius and Cygnus, which signify and make themselves known to everyone, that they are powerful Signacula of great wheighty matters…”
